Orchestra Leader Vacancy

China Tour 2019-20

We are looking for an outstanding orchestra leader who will further enhance the SPO. You will not only be a highly skilled performer with the ability to nurture players in your section, but you will also share in the orchestra’s ambition and ethos of enjoyment and passion for music making. We will pay a fee appropriate to suitability and experience.

Slaithwaite Philharmonic  Orchestra is an amateur orchestra based in the beautiful Colne Valley near Huddersfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

The Orchestra has a reputation for bold and adventurous programming, as well as championing repertoire often neglected by professional orchestras. Recent performances include the Requiems of Britten and Verdi, Mahler’s Second and Third Symphonies and Tippett’s Piano Concerto, as well as fully staged and costumed performances of Puccini’s La Boheme and Tosca, Wagner’s Flying Dutchman, and Bizet’s Carmen.

This season includes performances of  Elgar Symphony 1, John Adams' Harmonielehre and Walton’s Belshazzar's Feast.

In 2016 the SPO was recognised by the BBC in the programme All Together Now:  The Great Orchestra Challenge as one of the top five amateur orchestras in the country.

Each season the 80-strong-orchestra gives four concerts in Huddersfield Town Hall, and further concerts in other venues, including our 'home' venue, Slaithwaite Civic Hall. In recent years our away concerts have included Gorton Monastery in Manchester, Coutances Cathedral in Normandy and Shanghai Symphony Hall as part of our tours of China.

We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30.
